• Saw man jump to his death from third-floor balcony

  • 123 I was around 50 metres from the hotel when we heard the news of the fire. I rushed to the spot and saw the hotel engulfed in flames. We were standing outside, trying to provide help to douse the fire and rescue people who were trapped inside.

We saw a man standing on the balcony of a third-floor room of the hotel. He couldn't step out of his room to reach the stairs to come out of the hotel. He was panicking and desperately trying to reach to safety. We felt that he might try to jump from that balcony after he failed to get hold of a rainwater pipe. We shouted at him and warned him not to jump, but he didn't listen to us. He jumped, and his body dropped on the road as blood oozed out. We got him on a cycle van and rushed him to Shree Vishudhanand Hospital. The doctors at the hospital declared him dead.

Although we could not save that man, we could stop some others who were also trying to jump from the balcony. Those who went to the terrace were using flashlights on their mobiles to point out their locations.

When the firemen tried to reach the roof, we coordinated with those on the terrace. This continued for the entire night. We were trying to help the firemen as they brought down those who were injured. There were two kids who could not be saved. It devastated us.
