12 Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Friday issued a contempt rule against seven senior police officers in connection with the lathicharge on Howrah court premises in 2019, in which at least 10 lawyers were injured.
A division bench of Justice Debangshu Basak and Justice Arindam Mukherjee issued the contempt rule against IPS officers Bhavna Gupta, Vishal Garg, VSR Ananthnag, Avijit Banerjee, WBPS Ghulam Sarwar, officers Bipin Tamang and Rajarshi Dutta after their involvement in the act was established. The bench also directed them to appear before it in person on June 25 and submit why steps should not be taken against them.
In May 2019, there was tension at the Howrah court after a lawyer was roughed up by Howrah Municipal Corporation employees when the lawyer tried to park his motorbike in front of the HMC gate.
The district administration deployed police and RAF, which finally led to a lathicharge on the court premises.
