6 Myanmar students held in Siliguri with fake Indian IDs

12 Darjeeling: In two separate operations on Saturday, Sashastra Seema Bal's Border Intelligence Team, BOP Panitanki, apprehended six Myanmar students from Kharibari in Siliguri.
SSB officials said initial reports indicated that the individuals illegally entered India through Mizoram during 2022–2023 without valid passports or visas. All six were found in possession of forged Indian identity documents, including Aadhaar cards (mostly issued in Delhi), voter ID cards and a PAN card in one case.

The accused were identified as Maji Myo Htoi Li (26), Langh Ngaih Niang (28), Naw Thaung (27), Francis Tawk Lian Sang (20), Van Za Lian (20) and Roland Nawl Tling Lian (23). Kharibari Police produced the six in court, which remanded them in 14-day judicial custody.
"These individuals enrolled in a theology degree course at Witter Theological College, located in Vankhousing, Wokha, Nagaland, and were residing there since 2023. They travelled to Siliguri during a holiday break along with other Indian and Nepalese students from the institute and were divided into three separate groups," said an SSB officer.
"The first group, consisting of nine students — including three of the suspected Myanmarese nationals — was intercepted while attempting to cross into Nepal en route to Happy Land Adventure Park in Birtamore. Within a few hours, the BIT team successfully apprehended the remaining three suspects from the two other groups associated with the college," the officer added.
