• Fake & substandard meds seized during raids at Kol nursing homes

  • Kolkata: The West Bengal Directorate of Drug Control, which was already carrying out searches at multiple locations in connection to fake and non-standard medicines, searched four nursing homes in Kolkata on Saturday, including a prominent one at Alipore. Sources said the officials came across several batches of medicines that could not be traced back to their manufacturer.

When the drug control officers found strips of medicines being used at the nursing homes, they started cross-checking their authenticity. Upon scanning the bar code or QR code printed on the medicine strips or bottles, many of these medicines were found to be spurious.

While the drug control is sending notices to these manufacturers asking them to corroborate the medicines' authenticity, sources said batches of several antibiotics were also found to be not genuine.

"We have been making retailers aware of the ways to check the authenticity of the medicines. However, institutional supplies don't come under our purview. But if the companies start to earmark the batches of medicines earmarked for institutional supplies, such cases can be avoided," said Prithwi Bose, general secretary of Bengal Chemists and Druggists Association.
