  • RISHRA: After a Pakistan Rangers trooper was apprehended by BSF personnel at the international border near Sriganganagar in Rajasthan on Saturday morning, Rajani Shaw, the wife of BSF jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, detained in Pakistan since April 23, said on Sunday that she finally saw some glimmer of hope for her husband's return.

Rajani said, "I received news last night that BSF jawans caught a Pak Ranger in Rajasthan. If his (the Pak Ranger's) family members, like us, pressure the Pakistan govt for his release, then maybe their govt will now be more open to swapping those apprehended on both sides of the border. You see, a number of days have passed, and we have not heard anything." Rajani added, "I hope and pray this leads to some exchange of words between the BSF and Pakistan Rangers."

Rajani said she will travel to Delhi on Tuesday to meet BSF officers if she did not hear anything concrete about her husband's release by then. Rajani, who returned to Kolkata on Thursday from Pathankot where she went to meet her husband's commanding officer, said her family was anxious about Purnam's condition in detention, which has stretched to over 10 days now.

"I have been receiving assurances that Purnam is well and that he will return. But there is no explanation as to why he is being held back for so long. I don't think there is enough urgency on the part of the force to get him back. I am extremely worried," Rajani said. Devanti Devi, Purnam's mother, said, "Doctors advised Rajani not to move due to her pregnancy. Many eminent people visited our home, but nothing has happened till now."
