  • A BTech student was found dead at IIT Kharagpur in the early hours of Sunday, officials said, adding that the 22-year-old student hailed from Bihar’s Sheohar district.
The third-year student was found dead inside his hostel room in the SDS Block of Madan Mohan Malviya Hall of the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur, West Bengal, when police broke open its door around 3.30 am.

Although it is believed to be a case of suicide, the police are investigating all possible angles.

The student’s room had been locked from the inside since Saturday night. Officials said they informed the police after the student’s classmates who had called out to him repeatedly got no response, with phone calls made to him also going unanswered.

The student’s body was taken to BC Roy Hospital, where he was declared dead. It has been sent to Kharagpur Subdistrict Hospital for a postmortem.

According to sources, the police and IIT authorities have informed the student’s family in Bihar of his death. It is learnt that the family members have left for Kharagpur.

IIT Kharagpur has recently witnessed three other alleged student suicides–by a fourth-year student in April, a third-year undergraduate student in January, and a fourth-year student in June 2024.

According to IIT Kharagpur, the institute has counsellors available 24×7 hours to help students deal with stress and depression.
