  • Kolkata: CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday said Bengal govt had no information on governor CV Ananda Bose's report to the Union home ministry recommending, among other things, President's rule in the state "if the situation deteriorated further".

"Please understand, we have no such information. The governor is not well. He was in hospital. Let us all pray to God for his speedy recovery. Nothing more," she told reporters.

Trinamool Congress had on Sunday labelled Bose's report as a "please BJP and malign Bengal" one and questioned his neutrality. The party also said the situation was under control, so there was no question of "deterioration".

The CM's statement came as BJP defended the action. State leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari said on Monday: "BJP has never been in favour of capturing power through President's rule. However, I said earlier that the assembly poll should be held under President's rule and Election Commission should ensure that."

"The governor has said that if any such incident happens again, President's rule will be the only alternative for the state. It was a final warning to the state govt, and I welcome the governor's statement," he added.

CPM state secretary Md Salim issued a statement saying that the transfer of power from state govt to that of the governor through President's Rule would not solve Bengal's problems.

Earlier, Pradesh Congress president Subhankar Sarkar said: "In a federal structure, a democratically elected govt should not be removed by invoking Article 356."
