  • Kolkata: All 14 rooftop restaurants operating in New Town and Sector V — five in New Town and nine in Sector V — were found to be operating with grave anomalies. These will be served with notices to stop operations immediately.

This comes after a two-day inspection conducted by officials of the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) and Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA), focusing on fire safety compliance and preparedness measures of rooftop restaurants, bars, cafes, banquets, sports arenas, and other impediments to roof access. The authorities held a joint meeting on Monday to analyse the findings of the inspection.

"A report has been prepared based on the physical examination conducted during the weekend. All 14 rooftop restaurants operating in New Town and Sector V were found to have ‘grave anomalies' in terms of fire safety compliance and preventive measures. It was decided that notices will be served to them with intimation to the police and fire services authorities," said an official.

It was also decided that a comprehensive fire audit of all non-residential buildings and all residential buildings in New Town measuring above 15.1 meters in height, as well as all mixed-use buildings, will be taken up immediately.

"The fire audit will be conducted annually. A retired fire services officer is likely to be immediately inducted into the NKDA administrative set-up for supervising fire audit issues and ensuring follow-up actions based on the audit reports," said an official.

As for Sector V, officials mentioned that there was already a system of comprehensive annual fire audits for all buildings. "A retired fire services officer may be inducted into the NDITA administrative set-up as well," said an official.

In the adjacent Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) area, councillors have been asked to compile a list of all rooftop restaurants in each ward for the Bidhannagar Police Commissionarate to conduct inspections. A detailed fire audit will be conducted, after which final instructions will be issued in the BMC area of Salt Lake and Rajarhat Gopalpur.
