123 Kolkata: Even as several rooftop restaurants commenced their ‘back-end' work to take corrective measures, the National Restaurants' Association of India (NRAI) said on Wednesday that it will not ‘back or stand by' those who flout safety or civic norms. It also plans to interact more frequently with the govt and its agencies for clarity and better vigilance to ensure compliance with norms, other than issuing a second directive to its members to adhere to safety and hygiene regulations. On Monday, the NRAI issued an advisory to members asking them to stick to rules. "While we support our members, we expect them to follow rules. If anyone doesn't, then they will face action and we won't be with them. The shutting down of rooftop restaurants, we believe, has been a boon in disguise. It will lead to more clarity and open up avenues for frequent communication with the KMC. The mayor has always been approachable and we are looking ahead to a constructive dialogue with the civic authorities as directed by the court. So far as compliance is concerned, we don't expect our members to compromise and things can only get better from here," said NRAI president Sagar Daryani.Scrapyard and Romaania, the resto-pubs that moved court against the KMC action, operated their non-rooftop sections on Wednesday. While 90 out of 125 covers at Scrapyard, which began operations in 2016, were open, Romaania, which started functioning in 2022, had 40 out of 90 covers in use. Ankit Madhogaria of Scrapyard and Ramesh Agarwal of Romaania said they were expecting KMC to carry out an inspection soon so that they could make the necessary alterations required to conform with the law for the rooftop sections. "Whatever the govt and civic authority says, we will follow," remarked Agarwal. On Wednesday, Daryani said the dialogue with civic authorities will ensure better compliance and fairness. "There will be no compromise on the safety and security of visitors, restaurant staff, and on hygiene," he added.
