12 Kolkata: This year's Higher Secondary (HS) examination topper Rupayan Pal scored 99.4% in results declared on Wednesday. In comparison, over 20 students across ISC schools in Bengal scored between 99.4% and above, including securing a perfect score. This means students who passed out from schools affiliated with the CISCE could be in an advantageous position in terms of college admission. Now, all eyes are on the results of the Central Board of Secondary, which are yet to be announced.Of the 4.3 lakh candidates who appeared for the exams, 7,307 or 1.7% scored above 90%, which was 1.2% or 8,331 last year. Though the pass percentage—90.8%—slightly increased from last year, which was 90%, it is lower than the ISC's pass percentage recorded in Bengal, which was 98.8%. The most 90% and above were from the science stream (3,588), followed by humanities (3,116) and commerce (603).You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in KolkataA total of 72 candidates are in the top 10 merit list, among whom 55 are from Science stream, 2 are from Commerce, and 15 are from Humanities. In the top four positions—Rupayan Pal from Burdwan CMS High School (rank 1), Tushar Debnath from Bakshirhat High School (rank 2), Rajarshi Adhikary from Arambagh High School (rank 3), and Srijita Ghoshal from Sonamukhi Girls' High School (rank 4)—have subject combinations of physics, chemistry, mathematics, and biology.CISCE, which conducts the ISC exam, does not release state-wise figures, so a direct comparison cannot be made, but apparently, the number of top scorers who scored above 90% was significantly higher. However, HS council president Chiranjib Bhattacharjee said, "This was the best HS result compared to the last 10 years. There are 72 candidates in the top 10 merit list, which is also higher than last year. The number of candidates who scored above 90%, 80%, or 60% definitely increased. We hope this scenario will change from next year when the scorecards are prepared following the semester system."According to the data received from the HS council, in Kolkata, 533 candidates scored above 90%, followed by 2,375 candidates who scored above 80%, 4,370 above 70%, and 5,526 above 60%. Students from rural areas did better than students who appeared from urban areas. Data shows there were 1% of students from rural Bengal who scored above 90%, while only 0.66% of students from urban areas secured this score. A section of teachers, students, and parents felt these figures could reflect on the college admission, which will begin shortly. Bhattacharjee felt there are several institutes in Bengal, including Jadavpur, that prepare separate lists for students from different boards. "I don't think this would impact college admission because several institutes prepare separate merit lists for the students from different boards." However, a higher education official confirmed that there was no board-specific separate list prepared for college admission through the centralized portal.Among the top 72, four are from Kolkata—Tathagata Roy from Patha Bhavan, Ankit Chakraborty from Behala School ranked 8, and Sounak Banerjee from Taki House, Srijita Dutta from Bethune Collegiate School ranked 9.Council secretary Priyadarshini Mallick said, "We have already sailed ahead to raise more competent and technically sound individuals ready to face challenges globally."
