  • Kolkata: The mercury surged on Thursday to touch 37.4°C, the second-highest maximum this season so far. The Met office said there will be no respite from the scorching heat for now.The Alipore weather office has predicted hot and humid weather for Kolkata at least until the middle of next week. A few western districts may also get heatwave conditions.The minimum rose to 27°C from 25.8°C the previous day.This summer, the mercury spiked to the highest of 38.2°C on April 23, and then dipped. While it remained below normal for two weeks, it began breaching the normal mark by Wednesday when it touched 36°C. Met officials said this could climb close to 40°C in the next one or two days. "There is no scope of rain in the city for now. The mercury will rise further, making the weather hot and humid, where the real feel will make the weather intolerable," said an RMC source.
