Kolkata: Thirty private buses in the city will be fitted with specially designed ‘blind-spot mirrors' on Friday. The project, aimed at reducing accidents in the city, will be launched by KP commissioner Manoj Verma. Police plan to install these mirrors on 300 buses in a month. "Our focus is on managing blind spot accidents, which take place when bus drivers cannot see pedestrians or two-wheeler riders right next to the bus or crossing from the left.Such commuters and pedestrians can't be seen on the current small side-view mirrors. We urge all bus owners and drivers to install the blind-spot mirrors to reduce accidents," said a senior traffic officer leading the project. An officer pointed out that last year's data showed that minor accidents, involving buses, were mostly due to three reasons. "One, passengers trying to alight from moving buses or trying to cross right in front of the bus. Two, two-wheelers overtaking from the left and then, coming in front of the bus. Three, sudden jaywalking, mostly from the left side of a bus. In all cases, blind-spot mirrors will help drivers spot pedestrians and motorcyclists better," he said.
