123 Kolkata: Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Friday hailed the armed forces "who are fighting for the country fearlessly", while paying homage to Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagoreon his birth anniversary. Banerjee also said that while society was celebrating Tagore's birth and death anniversaries with pomp, it was gradually forgetting his teachings in everyday life."There is very little scope to deliver a speech here today. Today, we are paying homage on behalf of art, culture and media workers, but will also keep in our mind the Army personnel fighting for us fearlessly. Today marks the birth anniversary ofKabiguru. Tagore is our morning, our noon, our night, our happiness, our sorrow, our dreams, our experiences. Without him, we are nothing… His teachings continue to guide and inspire us. Every state has its own cultural heritage and it is our responsibility to uphold and celebrate that heritage, not on a particular day, but every day."Earlier, Banerjee quoted the poet on X, saying: "‘Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high/ Where knowledge is free/ Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls...' On the birth anniversary of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore, we offer our heartfelt respect to our ‘praaner thakur'. Not only on ‘Pochishe Baishakh', but every day, we remember him. He is in everything — our direction in life, our language, our hopes. The entire world is illuminated by the light of his creations."
