  • 12 Kolkata: While cases of foreign objects getting stuck in the throat among children are common, in a bizarre incident, a 68-year-old woman, Lahasho Devi of Jadavpur, had accidentally popped in the cap of plastic bottle while consuming medicine on Wednesday morning. The cap got stuck in her respiratory passage, causing distress. Doctors conducted a laryngoscopy to remove the foreign object. When she was rushed to KPC Medical College, Devi was gasping for breath and was on the verge of collapse. The woman didn't even realise that she had mistakenly swallowed the cap and thought it was the pill that had got stuck. When doctors conducted anemergency endoscopy, the test revealed that a blue plastic cap was stuck at the entry of the respiratory passage. "A few minutes' delay could have caused respiratory failure and cardiac arrest," said ENT surgeon Dwaipayan Mukherjee. The family had managed to take her to the hospital within 30 minutes of the incident. After undergoing the surgery, the patient was doing well. However, doctors have kept her under observation to check for any signs of infection. If all goes well, she will be discharged on Saturday.
