12 The security at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Portin Kolkata and the three major railway stations—Sealdah, Howrah and Kolkata Chitpore—was stepped up on Saturday following directives from the Centre. The measures were taken following review meeting between secretary of the shipping ministry T K Ramachandran and port chairpersons across the country.The leaves of all port staff have been cancelled till May 14."A high alert has been issued," said port PRO Sanjay Mukhopadhyay. "All activities, including cargo operations, will be under enhanced checks." The security framework includes mandatory ID checks, security drills, and increased monitoring. Eastern Railway, too, announced enhanced security measures. "We are deploying armed forces in addition to RPF and railway police," said a senior ER official. The measures include luggage screening at station entrances, checks of train cleaning yards and tracks, and increased CCTV monitoring. —Dwaipayan Ghosh
