  • 12 Kolkata: Another arrest was made on Monday in the Jafrabad father-son murder case. With this, all 12 main accused in the deaths of Haragobinda Das (70) and Chandan Das (40) have been held.Cops said the accused was identified as Akbar Ali. He was picked up from Godda in Jharkhand by a joint team of officers from Jangipur police district and the SIT probing the Murshidabad violence."Ali was names in the FIR and is the 12th person to be arrested. We have now arrested all 12 main accused, who played the most direct role in the twin murders. The focus now will be on securing their conviction," said Syed Waquar Raza, DIG (Murshidabad Range).Police also said that for at least one of the accused, conflict with the victims began over a piece of land. SP Amitkumar Sahu said: "It was learnt that personal animosity might be behind the murder."An SIT official said: "A dispute with one of the accused, Hajrat Ali alias Fitur, took place around eight months before the murders. There was an issue over selling of the land belonging to the deceased, with claims that the victims accepted money but then backtracked."Hajrat reportedly admitted to the police that this was his reason for killing the duo."Haragobinda and Chandan Das had a piece of land in Jafrabad. Hazrat wanted to install an electric pole and build a drain on the land for his house, but Haragobinda and Chandan withdrew their initial consent. This led to ongoing disputes between the two parties. It is suspected that Hazrat took advantage of the unrest in Murshidabad to carry out the attack," said a senior police officer. The officer added: "To only blame personal enmity, however, for the actions of the other 11, ruling out mob mentality, will be wrong at this stage of the investigation."A total of 322 people have been arrested so far for the violence that erupted in Murshidabad over protests against amendments to the waqf act.
