12 Kolkata: A group of delivery agents assaulted a traffic sergeant on New Park Street following a dispute over illegally parked motorcycles. Sergeant Parijat Mukherjee (42) from the East Traffic Guard sustained severe injuries in his neck, chest and shoulder in the attack, which occurred around 1 pm.The ruckus and the attack even disrupted the traffic in the area for some time.According to the complaint lodged by Mukherjee, he noticed numerous bikes being illegally parked on New Park Street, obstructing the flow of vehicles, especially at a time when the traffic pattern was about to switch. When he requested the delivery agents to remove their vehicles, they reportedly refused to comply, prompting him to issue them citations. "I asked the delivery agents to remove the bikes from the spot, but nobody complied. I made some prosecutions against illegally parked motorcycles," said Mukherjee. "Suddenly, at least a dozen delivery executives marched up to me and attacked me. They tore my uniform, kicked me multiple times and landed punches on my chest and back. All the while, they kept threatening and abusing me verbally. I got severe bleeding injuries around my neck and on my chest and shoulders." The accused also allegedly tried to damage his mobile, wireless set and body camera. As cops from Beniapukur Police Station and East Guard arrived, most attackers fled, but two of them, Abhijit Mondal and Javed Ali, were caught. Mukherjee was taken to CNMC Hospital, where he was treated and later, discharged.Lalbazar condemned the attack, stating, "Such violence against law enforcement officers will not be tolerated. We will ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice."
