  • Senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh’s 26-year-old stepson was found dead at his New Town residence on Tuesday morning.

Srinjoy Dasgupta worked with an IT firm. Sources said the family cook discovered him “unconscious”. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Police have registered a case of unnatural death and said they were awaiting the results of the autopsy. Sources said that the autopsy surgeon reported that Srinjoy died of acute haemorrhagic pancreatitis.

“As of now, there has been no formal complaint received by the police, neither from his mother, Rinku Majumdar, nor from any member of his family,” PTI quoted a police officer as saying.

Rinku Majumdar, who married Dilip Ghosh last month, said Srinjoy was found lying on his back.

Srinjoy’s maternal uncle, Paritosh Shil, said the two had planned to meet on Tuesday at Science City. Shil said that Srinjoy called him on Monday night, around 10 pm, saying he was “exhausted from work” but promised to meet him the next morning. Shil added that on Tuesday, his repeated calls to his nephew went unanswered. He came to know about his death from the cook.

On the day of his mother’s wedding to Dilip Ghosh, Srinjoy had said: “My mom has been fulfilling her social and family responsibilities for 13 years. This time, she is starting her own life. I am very happy (for her).”

He had also said that he “accepted” Dilip Ghosh as his father, noting the “emotional vacuum” in his life and his joy at gaining a father figure.

    PTI adds:

Rinku Majumdar told reporters that her son was suffering from some neurological disease and was on medication for the last year and a half.

She also said that her son could be under “severe stress” after she got married and left the flat to start living with Ghosh at his home. “I came to know that he was neither eating properly nor taking medicines. He never told me, but being a mother, I could feel that he was depressed,” Rinku said.

Majumdar also said that she was planning to take Srinjay to where she was staying now.

“He never told me that he was upset after the marriage. His friends asked me to take him with me… I was about to do that,” Rinku said, referring to the ‘Mother’s Day’ celebrations organised by Srijay and the gifts he presented to her on that occasion.

Ghosh expressed deep grief over the sudden demise of his “son” and said that he could not understand how to deal with the loss.

“It’s my bad luck. I am so very unfortunate. I never had the happiness of having a son, but I am mourning the demise. Srinjay was close to me. We went to watch matches. We were fond of each other,” Ghosh said.

Srinjay’s father, who lives in Halisahar in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, also went to the RG Kar Hospital.

“He spoke to me a week back and told me that he would be coming home… I do not know what to say,” the father said.
