1234 Kolkata: Even as restrooms in the Kolkata airport terminal are being revamped and maintenance is being improved, controllers, technical experts, weathermen, and other staff who ensure safe navigation of flights in the sky and on the ground have raised concerns over the filthy condition of restrooms in the air traffic surveillance building. For nearly a fortnight, the 15 restrooms in the building were not properly cleaned. The pile-up of garbage added to the unhygienic condition in the restrooms. The problem occurred when the term of the contractor that used to provide janitorial and housekeeping staff to the building expired on April 30. With no fresh contractor in place and security at the airport beefed up following the alert, only two casual staff were hired to clean the toilets that are used by around 500 people daily."There is foul odour and accumulation of waste in washrooms. Dustbins are overflowing and floors in the office area are unclean. This has raised the risk of infections and there is a serious threat of UTI for staff, especially women, who work in the facility that is in operation 24×7," ATC and CNS Guild officials wrote to the regional executive director on Wednesday, highlighting the pathetic situation.
