  • Kolkata: The family of Jayesh Laxmishankar Jaiswal (25), who was rendered brain dead following a truck accident, has donated his organs, saving the lives of at least four patients battling organ failure and restoring vision of two.Jaiswal's vital organs were on Wednesday transplanted into the four individuals. Jaiswal, who was being treated at Apollo Multispecialty Hospitals, became the fifth deceased organ donor this year. His lungs, liver and one kidney were allocated to the donor hospital, while one kidney was allocated to IPGMER. The cornea was donated to Disha Eye Hospital. Jaiswal was returning home in Cossipore on the night of May 8 and he had reached near his house, when a truck mowed him down. He was first taken to RG Kar Medical College, from where his family shifted him to the private hospital. Doctors there found his head injury to be severe, with multiple clots in the brain. "The brain damage was so severe that he was beyond saving. At a time of such immense loss of a young chap, his family agreed to this noble act of donating his organs to save multiple lives," said neurosurgeon S N Singh, under whom the deceased was being treated.A gym enthusiast, fitness freak and a wanderlust, Jaiswal used to live in Mumbai and had returned home about a year ago to help his father expand their family business. "My brother had a heart of gold, and he was full of life. He was an aspiring entrepreneur and was associated with a few NGOs, him being giving by nature. We lost him, but it gives us solace that he will continue to live in others," said cousin Akash Shaw. The family rued that RG Kar took a lot of time in documenting Jaiswal's medical records before his shift to the EM Bypass hospital. Following his family's consent, Apollo declared Jaiswal brain dead on Tuesday and informed ROTTO (east), which in turn, started looking for matching recipients. Even as doctors found all vital organs fit for transplant, no Kolkata hospital with a heart transplant facility had a matching recipient. As time ran out, his lungs, liver, two kidneys and two corneas were retrieved on Wednesday.Apollo becomes the third hospital in Bengal to conduct a lung transplant. Sources said the lung recipient is a 22-year-old student of fishery sciences who has been battling lung failure for some time now.
