Justice Lalit to hear Bengal guv’s objections to 17 VC appts, says SC

12 Kolkata: The Supreme Court on Thursday said Bengal governor CV Ananda Bose's objection to CM Mamata Banerjee's recommendations relating to the appointment of 17 VCs of state-run varsities, including Jadavpur and Calcutta University, will be heard by former Chief Justice UU Lalit.During the day, Bose submitted his objections and reasons in a sealed cover before an SC bench of justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh. Bengal govt told the SC that as per earlier directions, they had spoken to Justice Lalit, who has consented to examine Bose's objections and reasons.The apex court asked the SC registry to send a password-protected soft copy of the governor's reasoning to Justice Lalit within two days. The SC said it will hear the matter again on July 17.The SC-appointed search and selection panel headed by Justice Lalit had made its recommendations for appointment of VCs. CM Mamata Banerjee had indicated her preferences from the shortlist and send it to the governor. Bose agreed to appoint 19 VCs but objected to 17 names.
