123 Kolkata: Bikash Bhavan attendance dipped a day after the protest mayhem. Sources said very few staff attended the office on Friday, and several left within one or two hours. The entire building became almost empty by 4 pm.Many staff were found enquiring about plans by the protesting teachers on Friday to get an idea about the situation. A woman employee said, "I have been working here for over ten years now. I saw several agitations outside the building but never experienced such things before. They claimed themselves to be teachers, is this a way to behave with others?"There was a huge number of cops deployed on Friday at every gate of Bikash Bhavan. Only a part of the main entry gate was opened for entry and exit, where cops were posted. The State Bank of India's branch on the same premises was found closed on Friday. But protesting teachers who were outside Bikash Bhavan claimed they were misinterpreted. A prominent face of the movement, Chinmoy Mandal, said, "We wanted to know whether our jobs are secure or not. We don't know who instructed cops to charge baton on us. Shoes and paperweights were thrown from above." Vandalism allegedly took place during the scuffle on Thursday, and the state will seek a report on the damage.
