Kolkata: The state-run MR Bangur Hospital on Friday launched state-of-the-art laser proctology, a minimally invasive surgical technique that uses lasers to treat conditions affecting the anus and rectum. While most private hospitals in the city have this facility, the majority of govt hospitals are yet to introduce it.On the first day, three patients underwent laser ablation of the fistula tract using the diode laser machine."Right now, the programme will run three days a week. We will escalate the service once more surgeons, apart from the two trained doctors, complete the specialised training," said Medical Superintendent Sishir Naskar. General surgery professor Makhan Lal Saha said this surgery offers a good outcome for conditions like piles and fistula. Laser proctology in a private hospital costs Rs 60,000-70,000."This is a milestone for MR Bangur Hospital, which will offer this technology free of cost. Laser proctology has many advantages over the traditi-onal procedure," said Saha. Laser beams facilitate precise tissue removal and cutting, minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissues. It allows faster recovery, reduces scarring, and lowers the risk of post-surgical complications.
