  • Malda: Nearly four years after Kaliachak town in Malda district was perturbed by news of a local teenager killing four members of his family, the accused, Asif Mohammad, was sentenced to death for the sensational crime on Saturday.District judge Subhayu Banerjee of Malda found Mohammad's crime, perpetrated in Feb 2021 but discovered four months later, among the rarest of the rare and announced the verdict that he be hanged till death. After completing the hearing in this case, the court had found him guilty on Friday and reserved the sentence for Saturday.Special Public Prosecutor Bibhas Chatterjee said, "The learned court found the accused, who was 19 at the time of the crime, guilty under Section 302 of IPC for murder and pronounced hanging till death. He was also found guilty under Sections 201 and 307."The four bodies were exhumed from the floor of Mohammad's house at Kaliachak in June 2021. It was learnt the bodies lay buried there since Feb 28, 2021, when Mohammad, then 19, killed four members of his family. His victims were his father Jawad Ali (53), mother Ira Biwi (36), sister Rima Khatun (16) and grandmother Alek Nur Bewa (73).Mohammad Asif had made the five members of his family senseless by lacing their soft drinks with some medicines and, after tying their hands and sealing their mouths with tape. While Arif awoke and fled, Asif drowned the four others in a water tank and carried the bodies home, where he buried them in a room.
