  • 123 Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has ordered the demolition of a palatial house that Trinamool strongman from Kamarhati, Jayanth Singh, constructed after illegally occupying a plot and filling up a part of the adjoining pond near Mousumi Mor in Ariadaha. Justice Amrita Sinha ordered that the illegal house be demolished within eight weeks. The three-storey building was earlier declared illegal by Kamarhati Municipality. They claimed that a notice was sent to Dilip Mukhopadhyay, the owner of the land on which Singh's house was built. Mukhopadhyay was asked if Singh purchased the land from him and how he managed to build a house on his land. The incident sparked intense political debate.Last year, Jayanth's name came to light in connection with an assault incident in Kamarhati. In July last year, cops took Jayanth and his associates into custody after they thrashed a mother-son duo. Multiple videos thereafter emerged of the gang ruthlessly assaulting various people with hockey sticks, wickets, and bamboo on different occasions. Jayanth has claimed he was never present when the assaults took place. (With inputs from Sanjib Chakraborty)
