  • Kolkata: Close to a month after allegations of traffic violations were raised against a police vehicle, the Shakespeare Sarani Police Stationhas finally lodged an FIR to probe into the matter. The Fatal Squad of Traffic Police has asked the police station to do so after completing an initial inquiry. An advocate alleged that a police vehicle fled the scene after colliding with his car near a private school on Lord Sinha Road on April 22.The incident allegedly occurred when the lawyer had gone to drop his daughter to school. The high court advocate, who has demanded investigation and compensation from the vehicle owner, had threatened to move court over alleged police inaction in the case. The collision caused significant damage to the left front and side panels of the victim's car. Despite this, no cop present on the road reportedly tried to intercept the police vehicle, the victim alleged. The incident, which occurred within the jurisdiction of Shakespeare Sarani Police Station and South Traffic Guard, has raised concerns about accountability within the police department. "Initial inquiries revealed that no complaint was registered at the local police station, nor was any Motor Collision Report (MCR) filed following the incident," claimed an investigating officer. The victim, though, as documents show, lodged a two-page-long formal complaint with DC (Traffic) and OC (Public Grievance Cell) at Lalbazar on the same day as the incident. The victim filed a formal protest demanding criminal and departmental proceedings against the driver of the police vehicle under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. He is also seeking full compensation for vehicle damages and access to CCTV footage of the incident. Probe is on.
