123 Kolkata: A 47-year-old man who used to sell flowers at Kalighat died after a tall tree fell on him at Rabindra Sarobar on Monday. The man was lying below a tree when it suddenly uprooted and fell on him.He later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.KMDA authorities said they will look into the condition of tall trees inside the Lake premises and will take corrective steps if needed. "There are some trees which have dried out, are leaning, or seem to be in a damaged and lifeless state as visible from outside. Steps will be taken to prune or cut down these trees," said an official."The man was lying below a tree around 10.30 am on Monday when the tree suddenly uprooted and fell on him. The tree was removed immediately, and the victim, who was injured in his waist and legs, was initially stable. The police came to the spot. However, his condition deteriorated on the way to the hospital, where he expired," said a KMDA official.Officials said that the core of the fallen tree was found to be in a damaged state. "The roots somehow got loose as the tree uprooted," said an official.Lake regulars said that there were several trees in Rabindra Sarobar in a dangerous condition due to their roots being loose from the ground and leaning. "Most of the trees are covered with cement because the roots of the trees do not reach the ground. Thousands of people visit this lake every day, so it is necessary to mark the dangerous trees and put up placards or cut them to avoid such accidents," said environmentalist Somendra Mohon Ghosh.
