Kolkata: No coercive steps can be taken against two protesting teachers who were verbally directed by the Calcutta High Court to meet cops on Thursday morning regarding the protest outside. The judge also asked the protesting teachers to shift their demonstration to Central Park and limit the number to 100 persons on a rotational basis.
The two teachers, Indrajit Mondal and Sudip Konar, moved the bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh after being show-caused based on a case registered by the Bidhannagar (North) police station.
No formal order was passed by Justice Ghosh on Wednesday as he sought to peruse the case diary, which will be presented on Thursday at 4 pm. However, the teachers were asked to attend the show-cause, but state counsel Kalyan Banerjee verbally assured that no coercive steps would be taken.
Following the court order, four protesting teachers along with their lawyers went to Bidhannagar North PS around 7.15 pm. Terminated school teachers have been protesting outside Bikash Bhavan since May 7. The agitation turned violent on May 15, leading to several protesters as well as cops getting injured. After that, the cops summoned 17 teachers, out of whom two approached the court.
While showing the photographs of the protest, Banerjee said, "The state has full sympathy for them. If they did not attack the police, this would not have happened.
" He told the court of a particular instance where a pregnant employee was stuck inside, to which the judge said, "You are teachers. Why are you forgetting this?" He stated that while the court is not obstructing their peaceful protest, they must also not inconvenience the workers there.
The complaint by the teachers before the high court was that Trinamool supporters assaulted the protesting teachers in front of the Bikash Bhavan, but a complaint was lodged against the teachers instead. They claimed to have been falsely accused.
