  • 123 Kolkata: A post office peon, who was arrested in connection with the issuance of 29 passports against 10 Aadhaar cards, was granted bail by the Calcutta High Court on the grounds that his delivering the passports to an unauthorised person was at most a "dereliction of duty".Justice Suvra Ghosh on May 16 granted bail to the peon, Biswajit Ghosh. He was alleged to be part of a racket that issued 29 passports on the basis of 10 Aadhaar cards. The state counsel told HC that the gang obtained fake passports in exchange for huge amounts of money, and lakhs of rupees were transferred to the members over the last five years.Taking into account Ghosh's statement under Section 161 of CrPC, the judge noted that the only allegation against him was that he delivered 29 passports to co-accused Mohan Shaw in violation of the office memorandum, which mandates that passports should be delivered to the addressee only and not redirected. If not delivered, they should be sent to the sender. "The petitioner appears to have delivered the passports to the co-accused despite there being no authorisation in favour of the co-accused by the passport applicants. Such a lapse on the part of the petitioner can at best be termed as dereliction of duty. No money trail has prima facie been detected connecting the petitioner to the alleged crime," the judge observed.Ghosh's counsel submitted that, being a peon at the post office, he was not aware of the contents of the parcels. Moreover, no money trail could be linked to him during the probe. He was arrested in Jan 2025 for a case registered at Bhadreswar PS on Nov23, 2024.
