  • Jalpaiguri: Dinhata Police on Tuesday arrested 16 Bangladeshi nationals while they were attempting to cross over to Bangladesh. This comes within four days of the same police station arresting 28 Bangladeshis in a similar operation.Early on Tuesday, Dinhata cops received a tip-off about a group of 16 that had taken refuge at Falimari station. A team from Gitaldaha outpost reached the spot and found that all of them were Bangladeshi nationals who had infiltrated into India six years ago. They were illegally staying in Noida, working as daily labourers in brick kilns. The group consisted of six men, four women and six children. They reached New Cooch Behar station from Delhi, from where they took public transport to reach Nayarhat. It was late on Monday, and with nowhere to stay, they took refuge at Falimari railway station, intending to spend the night there. After being produced at a Dinhata court, 14 were sent to judicial custody for two weeks, while two remanded in police custody. "We need to know about their agents who help them travel illegally to and from Bangladesh. The operation against illegal immigrants forced them to attempt to return," a senior cop said.Similar to Friday's batch, these 16 Bangladeshis are also from Kurigram and the same vicinity.
