Caught during traffic drive, helmetless motorcyclist runs over sergeant’s foot

123456 Kolkata: A helmetless biker, hailed down during a rule-violation check on CIT Road on Monday, tried to reverse and speed away and ran over a police sergeant's foot. The sergeant, Malay Singha Mahapatra from Park Circus Traffic Guard, manning traffic on CIT Road at the intersection of CNMC Hospital around 10.25am, sustained severe injuries on his left foot. Mahapatra was recovering from a leg injury, for which he was undergoing treatment in Chennai, and this injury made it worse for him, said an officer from Lalbazar.According to the other policemen on the spot, a drive was on against helmetless riding and on spotting Md Jakir Alam, who was riding without a helmet, as was his pillion rider, Mahapatra had waved at him to stop. A resident of Collin Street, Alam was headed towards Moulali from Park Circus. "Alam was travelling at a high speed when our officer spotted he was without a helmet," said an ACP. "What should have been a routine stop, escalated into a dangerous situation that put both the officer and the public at risk." The motorcyclist was arrested by cops from the Beniapukur PS and his bike was seized. Mahapatra was taken to CNMC Hospital, where he was treated. Alam has been slapped with reckless driving, resisting law enforcement and causing injury to a police officer on duty cases. Additional charges of traffic violations, including riding without a helmet, were pending, said police."We take any assault on our officers seriously," said a DCP. The incident prompted Park Circus and East traffic guards and the Beniapukur PS to announce a more intense drive against violations. Lalbazar instructed all cops on roads to keep their body cameras on, preserve the footage for six months and to accept fines only through official apps.
