12 Kalimpong: Traffic movement for heavy vehicles was restricted on NH-10 starting Wednesday due to poor road conditions in several stretches of the highway. The worst-affected areas include Likhuvir (towards Siliguri) and parts of Kirnay and Melli (towards Sikkim from Chitray) along the NH-10 route. "Due to the bad road condition at Likhuvir, the movement of heavy vehicles on NH-10 is restricted till further orders," said Shrihari Panday, superintendent of police, Kalimpong.According to drivers and locals, the road is in a precarious condition even though there was no torrential rain in this part of the hills recently. "If it rains too much, the road will collapse," said Milan Tamang, a driver who regularly travels from Teesta Valley to Kalimpong. Tamang also mentioned that there was no traffic congestion on the route on Wednesday, but the danger remains. "There was a bus on NH-10 while I was driving back to Teesta Valley... the big vehicles barely fit across the road's width at the spot in Likhuvir where the road is damaged," he said.Meanwhile, locals say the situation is only going to get worse once the monsoon season sets in. "The monsoon hasn't even started properly, and the highway is already falling apart. This will be a crisis for at least three months from now," said Kabita Pradhan, a school teacher from Kalimpong. "Thanks to the alternative route, even though it is a longer one, we can use it in case of an emergency. Otherwise, people from Sikkim and Kalimpong would be at a standstill," Pradhan added. Authorities have advised drivers to proceed with caution and avoid unnecessary travel, especially during rainfall, as the road may further deteriorate.
