• Thunderstorms to hit West Bengal on June 4 and 5: IMD
    Indian Express | 5 June 2025
  • The IMD in Kolkata has forecast adverse thunderstorms over several districts of West Bengal between June 4 and 5.

The warning follows the persistence of an upper air cyclonic circulation, which was positioned over east Bihar on June 3 and now lies over north Bangladesh and adjoining areas at 0.9 km above mean sea level.

Under the influence of this meteorological condition, various districts across South and North Bengal are expected to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall.

On June 4, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph are likely to affect isolated areas in Murshidabad, Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, and North and South 24 Parganas. Other districts in South Bengal may see gusty winds of 30-40 kmph along with light to moderate rain.

In North Bengal, districts including Uttar Dinajpur, Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar, and Alipurduar are expected to witness thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, and heavy rainfall measuring up to 7 cm on June 4. Due to intense rainfall, landslides are likely in the hilly regions of Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts.

The forecast for June 5 indicates that thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds ranging between 30-50 kmph may occur at one or two places across Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, Jhargram, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad, and Purba Bardhaman.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has highlighted potential impacts including damage to standing crops, vegetables, and horticultural produce. There is also a risk of lightning strikes in open fields and possible traffic disruptions in urban areas.

A public advisory has been issued urging residents to remain indoors during thunderstorm activity. Citizens are strongly advised to avoid taking shelter under trees or electric poles and to stay away from water bodies during the forecast period. Traffic authorities are expected to regulate movement judiciously in affected areas.
