  • After a youth was allegedly beaten to death for opposing a group of drunkards who were creating a public nuisance on Sunday night, there has been tension in the Bakultala area of Jaynagar in South 24 Parganas district. Police have registered an FIR against 13 people and arrested two of them.

According to police sources, Sayem Khan intervened when a group of intoxicated men in Buichbati, a locality in Bakultala, allegedly used obscene language and behaved indecently in public. Residents said the men assaulted Khan, who later died of his injuries while being taken to a Kolkata hospital.

Tension peaked on Monday morning when residents blocked the road in protest, demanding the arrest of the accused.

“The alleged attackers, identified as Moktar Naskar and Qutubuddin Naskar from Rupnagar village, were among the men who returned to Buichbati on Sunday and attacked the Khan, resulting in fatal injuries. Both have been arrested. The investigation is on,” said a senior police officer.

Khan’s family claimed the two arrested accused have a history of criminal activities, including theft and robbery, and have frequently caused disturbances while intoxicated.
