Times of India | 8 June 2025
Kolkata: The Eastern Railway's Howrah division has taken up the restoration of Rani Jheel, a large water body near the Howrah carshed, to prevent waterlogging in the monsoon."Water overflowing from Rani Jheel floods the area, affecting the Howrah carshed, railway quarters and neighbouring residential areas. This persistent problem impacts railway operations, including punctuality, and residents' lives," Howrah DRM Sanjeev Kumar said. "The Howrah division engineering department finally addressed this long-standing waterlogging issue." "Our team identified the reasons behind the overflow: illegal garbage disposal on the bank, encroachments and blocked drainage channels, stopping smooth water flow into the Hooghly," an ER official said. Tenders have been invited for desilting and cleaning of the area's sewer networks and waterways. tnn
