Police officers injured in knife attack outside North Port PS

Kolkata: Two police officers were severely injured in a knife attack by a pavement-dweller outside the North Port Police Station near Howrah bridge on Saturday night. Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Partha Chand and constable Sukhendu Majhi were attacked by a man identified as Sultan, who allegedly used a sharp knife. ASI Chand suffered severe facial injuries in the assault.According to police sources, the accused, known to be a habitual drinker, was spotted wielding an iron rod on the pavement shortly before the attack. A third police constable confiscated the rod to prevent any untoward incident. However, unaware of this earlier confrontation, ASI Chand and constable Majhi came out of the police station after work and were attacked by Sultan as they left the police station.The accused also sustained minor injuries while the officers defended themselves. All three individuals were rushed to Medical College and Hospital for treatment."We are initiating a case under appropriate sections of law against the accused," said a senior police official who requested anonymity. DC Port Harikrishna Pai said the accused was arrested and will be sent for mental behaviour study.
