12 Kolkata: Following the success of the recently concluded week-long cleanliness drive in New Town, in which the authorities received over 300 complaints of littering and waste dumping from locals, the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is now planning to extend it to a year-round redressal system to dispose of construction and demolition waste. Residents will be able to inform the authorities about dumped construction waste for a quick clean-up. "The idea stemmed from the feedback and encouraging response to the recently concluded drive. There will be a dedicated helpline number for residents to address grievances about construction waste, especially in Action Area II and III, where mass construction activities are underway. Once a complaint is received, NKDA will send teams to the spots, and it ensures the waste is collected and disposed of at the earliest. The helpline number will function throughout the day during normal office hours," said an NKDA official.Officials said they were finalising a mapping of manpower, which would be divided into zone-wise groups to reach out to the sites from where complaints are registered. "We expect to introduce the system by the end of this month," said an official.Residents welcomed the move, saying that construction waste, like household garbage, is often found dumped on the roadside or vacant plots. "Most of the time, the waste is not properly disposed of, creating air pollution. It is a welcome move by NKDA to address the matter," said Pulak Dey of New Town BE block.
