Kolkata: A CISF head constable posted at Kolkata International Airport, Suman Nag, dialled 112, the national helpline number, instead of 100 after his bike went missing from the Mahajati Nagar market near Birati on Tuesday, and within one hour cops managed to recover the bike and hand it over to its owner.Bengal logged into the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) helpline number 112. Several states, including Bengal, have been migrating to the central one-number emergency system since 2021. ERSS is modelled on the 911 system in the US. Within moments of receiving the call from Nag, an alert was received by all nearby police stations, complete with the call recording forwarded to all the officers. The 112 project aims to cut down police response time to 10 minutes in urban areas and 15 minutes in rural areas. Under this system, the call is considered ‘live,' and updates need to be provided periodically to Bhawani Bhavan until the call is ‘closed'.On Tuesday, within an hour of the call, as many as 70 CCTV cameras were searched by multiple teams as an SOS was generated. The bike was recovered in less than an hour by Airport Police, one of the fastest recoveries this year. According to the MHA, a detailed response system has been planned under 112.
