Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the passport authority to apprise on the status of a passport application of a transwoman on June 18. The transwoman applied for the passport in 2023.Anuprabha Das Majumder applied for a passport in 2023 after receiving her transgender identity card. Her counsel informed the court that she provided all the necessary documents requested by the authority, including the transgender identity card. However, the passport was not issued, citing that "the appropriate authorities had not notified the passport officer about the existence or validity of the transgender identity card."The passport office's counsel submitted that, according to his instruction, she did not apply for the passport. However, since the supplementary affidavit submitted by her counsel mentions she did, he needed to take instructions again. Justice Amrita Sinha expressed surprise at the authority not having knowledge of a passport application made in 2023.
