A Border Security Force (BSF) constable was fatally shot by a fellow jawan late Saturday at the Dhulian camp, Murshidabad district, police and BSF sources said. The victim, 57-year-old Ratan Singh of Rajasthan’s 119th battalion, was killed allegedly after a dispute with 29-year-old Shivam Kumar Mishra, a Chhattisgarh native who served under Singh.
According to sources, a heated argument reportedly broke out between the two jawans within the BSF camp during the night. The altercation escalated, leading Mishra to open fire on Singh with his service rifle. The deceased jawan reportedly sustained six bullet wounds and died at the scene. He was rushed to the Jangipur sub-divisional hospital.
Mishra, who joined the BSF four years ago, was arrested immediately. An FIR under the murder provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered on a complaint by BSF authorities. He was produced before the Jangipur court on Sunday and remanded to judicial custody. BSF reinforcements have been stationed at Dhulian camp since April, following a High Court directive after earlier unrest in Murshidabad.
