4 held for blast at TMC's Kaliganj 'victory parade': Bomb killed 9-year-old; political tensions surge

NADIA: The Krishnanagar police have arrested four people in connection with the bomb blast that claimed the life of a minor girl in Molandi, Borochandghar under the Kaliganj police station limits, officials said on Tuesday. The arrested have been identified as Adar Sk, Manowar Sk, Kalu Sk, and Anwar Sk, police confirmed. "In incident of explosion at Molandi, Borochandghar under Kaliganj police station area, which led to death of a minor girl, 4 prime accused persons were arrested yesterday- Adar Sk, Manowar Sk, Kalu Sk and Anwar Sk. Kaliganj PS Case No. 534/25 dt 23. 06. 25 u/s 191(2)/191(3)/190/118(2)/109/305/103 BNS & 3/4 ES Act is registered. Investigation and legal proceedings are underway," said the police in a post on X. The incident has sparked widespread political condemnation. Earlier on Monday, Union minister Sukanta Majumdar launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC)-led West Bengal government following the death of a minor girl in a bomb blast during post-poll celebrations. Calling the incident a sign of deteriorating law and order, Majumdar remarked, “There is no democracy left here. ”The blast occurred during victory celebrations after TMC candidate Alifa Ahmed won the Kaliganj Assembly bypoll. During the festivities, a bomb reportedly exploded, critically injuring a 13-year-old girl, who later succumbed to her injuries. Majumdar accused TMC workers of “hurling bombs” at Communist Party of India (Marxist) supporters amid the celebrations. West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari also condemned the incident, alleging that a TMC supporter “dropped a bomb” at a CPI(M)-backed residence in an effort to make the “Muslim booth free of opposition. ”The Congress party joined the chorus of condemnation, staging protests across the state. State Congress President Subhankar Sarkar called the incident a “blot on the history of West Bengal elections,” demanding strict action against those responsible. "What we saw today was a blot on the history of West Bengal assembly elections. By-elections were held throughout the country, but we saw no bloodshed anywhere else," Sarkar said during the protest. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the Kaliganj bomb blast incident that claimed the life of a minor girl. According to NCW member Archana Majumdar, the commission has asked the police to submit a detailed report within two days. Earlier, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock over the incident and directed law enforcement authorities to take "strong and decisive legal action" against those responsible. Mamata Banerjee wrote on X, "I am shocked and deeply saddened at the death of a young girl in an explosion at Barochandgar in Krishnanagar police district. My prayers and thoughts are with the family in their hour of grief. Police shall take strong and decisive legal action against the culprits at the earliest. "
