  • Kolkata: A dispute over dues at a chicken shop in Shyambazar turned fatal for the 47-year-old owner, Maya Santra, while her son Ranjit sustained chopper injuries on his head and is stated to be serious. Santra died at a nursing home on Tuesday. On Monday, she had intervened in a fight between Ranjit and a customer, Gobinda, at their family-owned chicken shop on Shyambazar Street. Joint CP (crime & traffic) Rupesh Kumar said Gobinda visited the shop around 11 am and demanded meat despite owing money to Ranjit. On being refused, Gobinda damaged the shop and attacked Ranjit with a chopper. Santra rushed to the shop after being alerted by locals. When she attempted to intervene, Gobinda threatened to kill her, and then hit her with the chopper before pushing her on to the road. Cops said the exact reason of death will be confirmed after a post-mortem. But sources said she also suffered internal injuries. Somnath, the deceased's husband, filed a complaint at Shyampukur PS. Cops have registered a case under relevant sections, including those pertaining to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. "We are checking CCTV footage and some witness accounts are being verified," an officer said. Cops started a search for Gobinda.
