Cal HC chatbot, e-bail bond to make process easier for litigants

12 Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday integrated a chatbot into its official website, along with the introduction of an e-bail bond and a training centre for HC and district courts staff to make the judiciary more accessible and transparent to litigants.A chatbot is a computer program that simulates human conversation through text or speech. In their 2023-24 annual report, it was stated that a team of expert software analysts was developing the AI-powered chatbot with advanced self-learning capabilities.During its inauguration, Calcutta High Court Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam said: "After getting feedback from the public, it will be upgraded accordingly. Apart from the ongoing efforts to improve accessibility, transparency, and user experience, this chatbot has been designed in-house for litigants and the general public wanting to obtain information relating to court operations anytime, anywhere." It is designed to assist the district court in efficiently maintaining the surety details relating to bail bonds. "There was a genuine need to replace the physical bail bond register maintained in each section of the district judgeship with a digital register. This will ensure transparency and reduce the time taken in the process," the chief justice said.Along with strides in technological developments, a training-cum-examination centre was also inaugurated. The chief justice said that training modules will be designed with the West Bengal Judicial Academy so that HC and district court staff can be trained in the nuances of e-governance.
