Kolkata: A 21-year-old youth and a woman riding a motorbike without helmets died on Maa flyover when the former crashed into the median divider of the flyover's link with AJC Bose flyover's arm on Sunday morning. The impact flung both of them off the bike as their heads rammed into the side rails first before crashing onto the road, leaving them in a pool of blood. They were taken to SSKM Hospital shortly after the accident by cops and passerby motorists, where they were declared dead on arrival. Police said Aditya Singh, a resident of Kiran Shankar Roy Road in central Kolkata, was riding his friend's bike and picked up Neha Singh (27) from her home in Baguiati and took off for a ride. Relatives of the two at the hospital, however, told reporters that they didn't know where the two were headed. The accident happened at the intersection of Maa flyover with the AJC Bose flyover link around 11 am. They were heading towards the SSKM, police said. "As per available CCTV footage, it seems the biker was overspeeding when he somehow lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the median divider on the flyover. If the two had worn helmets, they could have still been saved, but without any protective headgear, the two stood no chance of survival," said a senior Kolkata Police officer.
Initially, police were unable to identify the victims. However, a phone number linked to the bike's registration number helped officers trace the bike's owner in the Burtolla police station area. Police reached his home and found Aditya borrowed the bike from a friend, the original owner of the two-wheeler. The front portion of the motorcycle was found mangled at the scene. Bloodstains and broken parts of the vehicle, along with personal belongings of the woman, were scattered across the flyover. Blood was also seen several metres away from the point of impact, indicating the force of the collision. Cops said they are checking if Aditya had a valid driving licence. In another accident on Sunday, a collision took place between a motorbike and a scooter on Sahapur Road in New Alipore around 2am, leaving all four riders severely injured. None of them had helmets on. While the two men on the motorbike were discharged after preliminary treatment, the two others riding the scooter are still admitted at separate hospitals.
