HC orders CBI probe into 2019 murder of 3 BJP workers in Sandeshkhali

Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Monday ordered a CBI investigation into the 2019 murder of three BJP activists at Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas. Justice Jay Sengupta directed the CBI joint director to set up a special investigation team to probe the murders, after noting police inaction for years despite a complaint being lodged at the Sandeshkhali police station. Petitioners had moved the HC claiming police did not act on the complaint in 2019 because Trinamool functionary Sheikh Shahjahan and his cohorts had been named as accused in the case. The counsel for petitioners had raised the matter in Jan 2024, soon after Shahjahan was arrested in a case related to an attack on ED officials who had gone on a raid of his Sandeshkhali home. Shahjahan is currently in judicial custody.
