  • The National Commission for Women (NCW) team on Sunday visited the law college in Kolkata where a 24-year-old student was allegedly raped on June 25.

NCW member Archana Majumdar along with two other members visited the local police station and from there they were taken to the crime scene.

During her visit to the law college, Majumdar was seen having a verbal exchange with the police officers present. Initially, the police did not permit the NCW team to visit the crime scene or conduct videography. They were later allowed to enter the campus.

“The rooms were cordoned, sealed stairs locked, no college personnel were there. Police have shown us nothing of the crime scene,” Majumdar said while speaking with The Indian Express.

Bidhan Saha, Assistant Commissioner of Police, who was present on the spot said, “No photographs or videos can be taken, no lock or seal will be broken, they will just look at the place.”

According to Majumdar, they were not informed that the victim was being brought for reconstruction of the crime scene on Saturday night.

“We were not told the victim will be taken for crime reconstruction, we could have joined them,” she said.

The NCW were also unable to meet the victim and the family as the victim’s father was unreachable.

Majumdar claimed that the police could not provide her with the details of the whereabouts of the victim.

“The Superintendent of Police of Baruipur, informed us that the victim’s house is under lock and key and the whereabouts of the victim unknown. The victim’s safety and security is on the nodal officer that is huge negligence. Neither the victim nor the victim’s family was available to us,” Majumdar said.

She further alleged, “The District Commissioner (DC), South Suburban Division (SSD) said she had dropped the victim to an undisclosed location… and after that the victim’s whereabouts is unknown. This is a huge negligence of the DC, she is answerable either she was lying or hiding the truth from us.”

Meanwhile, the victim’s uncle said that the family “demands death penalty for the culprits”.

“We are happy with the progress of the investigation. She had never spoken to us about any pressure in college and had never said anything about the accused also. She was part of the union. We have faith in the administration and Kolkata Police, not wanting CBI. The NCW had called and we told them that we can speak over the phone, but do not wish to meet them now.”

The NCW team will reach New Delhi on Monday and have a meeting with the chairperson and other members and will decide on the next steps.
