Woman molested, threatened with rape at Kidderpore mela in Kolkata

Kolkata: A 23-year-old woman was allegedly molested and threatened of rape by an Ekbalpore man at a Ratha Yatra mela on Friday evening near the Fancy Market entrance in Khidderpore, police said. The accused, who has an old rivalry with the woman's husband, allegedly grabbed her hand forcefully and verbally abused her in full public view. The victim, who lodged a police complaint, claimed that the accused had allegedly proceeded to tear the her clothing during the assault and also threatened to harm her husband. Sources said the victim attempted self-harm but was prevented by family members. Police have launched an investigation and are reviewing surveillance footage from the market area. Multiple witnesses have come forward with statements, according to police sources. "We have identified the accused, but we are yet to nab him ," said an investigating officer from Watgunge Police. The police have assured the victim and her family of protection.
