• Speeding truck hits police patrol car in West Bengal's Midnapore; 2 cops dead, 1 injured

  • Representative Image TAMLUK: A police patrol car from Mahishadal police station in East Midnapore was involved in a severe accident in the early hours of Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of two police personnel, including sub-inspector Jayanta Ghoshal.

    Around 1 am on Wednesday, the patrol vehicle was travelling on National Highway 116 near Haldia Mecheda when a speeding truck lost control and collided with it. The force of the impact caused the police car to veer off the road into a ditch, trapping the officers inside.

    According to a senior officer from the East Midnapore District Police, the deceased Sub-Inspector was identified as Jayanta Ghoshal (47), and the other fatality was Sheikh Hossain Khan, a member of the West Bengal National Volunteer Force. Constable Swapan Das sustained serious injuries and was transported to Tamralipta Medical College and Hospital, where he remains under treatment.

    The driver of the police vehicle survived as he was outside the car during the collision. Superintendent of Police Soumyadip Bhattacharya and a large police contingent promptly responded to the scene. When the truck attempted to flee towards Mecheda, officers from Nandakumar Police Station chased and apprehended it and its driver.

    Police and local sources stated that the patrol was near the Garughata bus stand on National Highway 116 when the accident occurred. The incident has cast a pall of grief over the police community.
