Kolkata: The state govt has approved the proposed second bailey bridge project on Kestopur Canal to connect Salt Lake and VIP Road, as the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) plans to take up work to set up the foundation and sub-structure of the bridge from the end of this month. Officials said that the bridge is expected to be set up and opened for traffic before this puja.
"It will be a two-way bridge for vehicles to move on both sides, connecting Salt Lake AA Block and VIP Road near Dakshindari," said an official.
The present bailey bridge situated at Lake Town beside the Lake Town foot overbridge, only allows one-way traffic entering Salt Lake from VIP Road. The existing bailey bridge was set up in Sept 2019 as an alternative one-way route to enter Salt Lake from VIP Road.
Officials said that the new bailey bridge will be about 45 metres long with a width of about 7.5 metres, having two lanes, more or less similar to the Lake Town bailey bridge.
"Tenders have been floated to appoint an agency which will conduct sub-structure foundation work on which the bailey bridge steel structure will be placed. Work to set up the sub-structure and foundation is expected to be taken up from the end of this month," said a govt official.
