Kolkata: Junior Union minister Sukanta Majumdar on Wednesday moved Calcutta High Court challenging his "unlawful detentions by state police" at recent political protests.
The petition was admitted by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, and the matter is expected to be taken up for hearing this week. The petition reportedly details various instances of unlawful restriction and detention by cops, allegedly done with complete disregard for fundamental rights guaranteed under sections 14, 19 and 21 of the Constitution.
Last month, Majumdar had moved a "breach of privilege" notice with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. He mentioned being "gheraoed and attacked" by "Trinamool workers" at Diamond Harbour on June 19, and alleged that Diamond Harbour SP Rahul Goswami was at the spot. Alleging a serious breach of privilege and contempt of the House, he requested the Speaker to take cognizance of the matter.
